How to Improve Your Child’s Speaking Ability

Every child learns to talk in their own time. Some children start speaking very early and fast, and some, on the contrary, develop this skill more slowly. Even if your child has difficulty speaking or is not yet using many words, you can take specific steps to help your child develop their abilities, sometimes with the help of a professional like speech and language therapy.

Talk to Your Child Often

The best way to help your child speak better is by talking to them often. Speak with a lot of simple words and short sentences. Describe your actions, call any objects close to you by their name, and ask questions. Even if your child does not speak yet, they hear and learn from you.

For example, if you are cooking breakfast, you can say:

“I am cooking eggs. The eggs are white and yellow. Do you want to eat eggs too?”.

This will make your child hear words that they have not heard before and realize how they are used.

Read Books Together

Reading is a good way to develop your child’s language. Choose more picture books with simple words. Point to the pictures and name the items. Ask your child to name what they see or ask them to turn a page. You can also read the same book every day.

Sing Songs and Rhymes

Songs and rhymes make learning fun. Rhymes like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or “Old MacDonald” teach rhythm, sound, and new words. Children enjoy music, and they often try to sing along, which helps improve their speaking.

Avoid Screen Time

Watching TV or using a tablet for too long can affect your child’s speech. Try to keep screen time short and focus more on face-to-face talking and play. Your child learns best through real conversations, not from screens.

Be Patient and Supportive

Every child is unique. Some children begin to speak later than others, and that’s normal. You should not forcibly invite the child to talk. Be patient and give them time to answer. Smile and nod when it’s your turn to speak. Always try to correctly repeat the child’s words and gently point out new ones when needed.

Get Professional Help if Needed

By the age of two, if your child is still not very talkative, or if you find it difficult to understand, visit a speech therapy center. A professional therapist will be able to help your child improve communication skills step by step.

Blossom Valley Therapy Center offers expert speech therapy for kids to develop clear and confident speech.

Our therapists are gentle and experienced and work patiently with every child. We create fun learning plans for each child based on their needs. Our goal is to help your child speak clearly and confidently.
